Situated on the west mainland of Shetland, the award winning wildlife haven, Michaelswood, is one of those secret hideaway places that once discovered is never forgotten.

Michaelswood - a very special place

Michaelswood is a community led project that works in partnership with schools, nurseries and other educational and local groups, raising awareness of nature and the environment.

One of our favourite places to visit in Shetland is a small plantation of trees and shrubs called Michaelswood. Michaelswood in Aith was created by Ray, Betty and Alan Ferrie in memory of their son/brother Michael.

Hundreds of trees have been planted at Michaelswood by volunteers over the years. There is also a bird observatory, a pond, a “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” area, benches, a pirate ship to play in, and a "Philosophers’ Trail".

A Stone’s Throw Away

• East Burrafirth – Some great hill walking to be had here. A path leads up the Burn of Lunklet to the waterfall and on to some fantastic views of the Westside’s lochs, hills and islands.
• Aith Pier – Here at Little Trekkers we have great admiration for the RNLI. One of their most modern lifeboats, a 17-metre, ‘Severn’ class boat, is stationed at Aith.
• Staneydale Temple – Dating back to the Stone Age these heel-shaped ruins are thought to be almost 4,000 years old.
