Catching the Climbing Bug

Catching the Climbing Bug

Harry was raring to have his first go at "proper climbing". The weather was a bit dodgy so the Spotty Otter suit was ideal, even if the wellies weren't. (Harry and his wellies are inseparable).

We headed down to the rocks at our little taste of Heaven near the Ards Peninsula (aka - the caravan) and chose our route. Harry sped up it, cheered on by little sis, Chloe in the back-carrier (audible on the video we also took) except for a lengthy pause to indulge in another of Harry's passions - tractor watching (I think it was a John Deere) but hey, there was no rush.

Harry had a ball and we were delighted he appears to have caught the Teague climbing bug. So - it's onwards and upwards - next route the Eiger! (Although perhaps not for a year or 2 - don't think Chloe would last that long a route in the back carrier, so best wait until she's big enough to get harnessed up too - not long now)!

Lovely to see some outdoor climbing action. My 2 love it, but have only ever climbed indoors, which looks very different.
Harry looks like he is having a lot of fun too.

Kerry and Ash - what amazing parents! You need to start some kiddie outdoor climbing classes, or family classes? Well done you!

Aw - thanks, Lizzy. I reckon classes might be a step too far for us at this stage but we'd be happy to show off all the good spots we've found so far any time you're in the area!
Fiona - what age are your 2? Our local wall is full of gnarly climbers and pumpy routes - I struggle hauling myself up anything there, although there's a great wall about 45mins away and I'm wondering when might be a good time to give it a go - what do you think?

Kerry, what helmet is Harry using? Although I think James might have to master walking before we attempt climbing. We have been looking for helmets for James so we can attempt a few more "interesting" paddles but have been struggling to find anything even remotely small enough. Have any other little trekkers got any helmet suggestions?

Hi Kerry. My girls are 5 and 7 years old, and the local indoor wall is full of Mummies belaying their kids! Lots of easy (and permanently top roped) climbs too :-)
But to be fair we only go during the week, when I guess most of the hardcore crew are at work?
Kids here only go to school until 11:30am most days, so we eat lunch, and then head off to climb.
If you can make it to the local wall then maybe mid week is your best bet, or at the weekend when the weather is good and everyone is off on the outdoor crags.
Let us know how you get on.

Hey Kerry great picture. I'm like Fiona, my older one has done a bit of climbing indoors but nothing outdoors yet. Looks much more fun to me!! What sort of age does your harness go from to? We don't have anything as have always used the ones supplied at the walls. My eldest first did it at 3.5 years old. (Now 4.5) The younger one wanted to try but just swung around not really going anywhere!!...but thats fine, I'm never one to dampen her eagerness for anything in the way of adventure!

Hi Fiona. I'm jealous - there is def no Mummy's climbing scene going on at our local and the routes are just too reachy for tiny totes - not to mention pumpy with tiny holds not great for developing tendons and muscles, etc - maybe I should make that a bit of a crusade? Harry and Chloe are still only 4 and not quite 2 so I'm happy for them to scramble about on (albeit very mini versions of) the real thing for a while yet - much cheaper too! I will def add getting them to an indoor wall to our to-do list, tho and see how we get on.

Joanne - swinging about on ropes is def a highlight for wee ones - I'd do it myself if I didn't get loads of funny looks from much more sensible adults! AS for the harness, it's not really a perfect fit as the attachment point is right at face level when the rope is tight because Harry's still a bit small for it (He's small for his age, tho). We tried as many as we could and went for the best one but I think the key is to tie in and not clip is as getting whacked in the face with a knot is a lot less off putting than with a screw gate. It also calls for careful belaying - striking that balance between not hauling them up stuff but not leaving the rope so slack that there's a big jerk should they slip - impossible to get right every time but still worth trying. As for the upper age range I have to confess to not really knowing as our main concern was getting the best fit for tinies - I imagine it should last until they're old enough to think that full-body harnesses are uncool - I'm hoping that's still a good few years off but suspect it might come round in the blink of an eye if the last 4 years are anything to go by!

    Hi Helena.
Harry's actually climbing in his bike helmet the smallest we could find when he was 9 mths and we'd just got his new bike seat - he's nearly too big for it now so we're on the search for the next one. I'm not sure what the smallest actual climbing helmet is - we took the decision just to use his bike helmet in the meantime rather than double up with something else expensive that needed stored in between adventures mainly because we feel there's no real risk of head injury (not loose rock, full body harness, no-one else on the "crag" etc, etc) - I suspect I may have opened a can of worms here - other trekkers' parent views are welcomed. The plan is just to establish a helmet wearing habit and buy a proper helmet in the future so comfort was the next big factor. Interestingly, when it was time to buy Chloe's first bike helmet, Harry's version did not fit her and we ended up going for a bigger size and different brand to get a good fit - random. I suppose heads come in different shapes as well as sizes so it's a good idea to try on as many different ones as you can get hold of. I would advise against going for the elastic fit ones, tho, as I think they would be very uncomfortable when the child is in the upper end of the fit range and this was confirmed by Harry when we tried on one we were considering for Chloe. Happy hunting! Let me know if you come across anything good!

    Hi Kerry
loving the blogs! the climbing looks amazing. I've been thinking of a day trip down to Quintin Bay where I spent hours in rockpools when I was wee. Went to Groomsport a week or 2 ago with my 2 and they loved collecting shells n pebbles. the school hols can't come quick enough!
