Cycling Mangare Lagoon and the Coastal Walkway
Mathilda is so happy to cycle along for such great distances that we thought we would do the second part of a path we had done earlier in the summer. Isabel is not so happy these days to sit in the trailer so it was slow going for parts as she tootled away on her balance bike.
Pushing by foot is definitely not as fast as pushing the pedals! She is doing so well we are tempted to try her on a real bike even if she is only 2½ years old. On a side note, balance bikes are just fab. Someone lent me one and after a month of riding it, at the age of 3½, Mathilda was riding a normal bike with no training wheels and hasn't looked back!
This path is not a sealed pathway so the bumps and rocks took a bit of getting used to but the views were just fabulous. You would never have guessed we were so close to Auckland City and that the airport was right nearby too and to start and finish at a council run (so free) children’s farm was perfect too.
As always the Spotty Otter coat kept the wind off when needed and matches the bike too which seems to go down well with Mathilda.

Gorgeous pictures, and we too were huge fans of balance bikes.
Both my girls rode one and progressed seamlessly onto pedal bikes (no training wheels) at age 3. Balance bikes are so popular in Switzerland that the local bike shop doesn't even stock training wheels - they have to be specially ordered!
I think Isabel would manage a pedal bike - it's certainly worth a try if you can find one in her size.
Hi Fiona, its great to hear someone else say yeh give it a go.. I just have to get the bike back from a friend whose daughter has been borrowing it! The trouble is she is 5 and only just managing it and my friend is a not quite as adventurous as me or my girls so I feel slightly awkward saying I want it back for my 2.5 year old!. Then again it might persuade my friend she needs to put her daughter on a bigger bike as she is far far far too big for the 12 inch now!!
