From Rock Pools to Rivers
The trouble with having two biology teachers as parents is that Arlo gets roped into lesson planning on the weekends. Yesterday we went down to our local river to see what we could find in preparation for some fieldwork. Arlo got stuck in having mastered his skills in the rock pools of Cyprus a couple of weeks ago.
Disappointingly they don’t make waders or kick nets for two year olds so it was a bit a bit of a battle with oversized equipment. Luckily dada come to the rescue wading further in to get a good sample.
Okay, so identification keys might be a little bit ambitious at this age, but I’m definitely thinking about producing some simple toddler “snap” cards for our next visit to see if he can spot some of the organisms that match his cards.
Remember not to go to rivers by yourself though, especially if it has been raining, as the water can be a lot faster than it looks. It’s great to take your parents because then you can scare them with all the slimy or crawly creatures you find.
