Rice Pudding for Breakfast

Rice Pudding for Breakfast

Quick the rain has stopped.......time for a night camping. It was the first sunny moment of our holiday in the Lake District so after tea I packed my bike with trailer, tent and two girls and cycled the couple of miles from my parents’ house in Coniston down the lake side to a lovely campsite (Coniston Hall).

The girls had been asking to sleep in the tent for a while now. Since we have a campervan and spend most of our time in that they get really excited to sleep in a tent.

We had been dodging rain clouds all week so it came as no surprise that as soon as we cycled into the campsite there was an enormous rumble of thunder and the heavens opened. I quickly threw the outer tent over our heads and the bikes to keep dry for the 10 minutes until it stopped. Some kids find thunder and lightening scary - mine were fascinated and very excited.

Toasting Marshmallows

Teagan and Summer did a fantastic job at helping to pitch the tent, blow up the therma rests and unpack the sleeping bags. We then wandered down to the lake side to make a wee fire and toast some marshmallows. I really need to practice my Boy Scout skills as I was down to the last match when I eventually got the fire burning!

From past experience I knew the girls would not easily go to sleep so we didn’t even attempt going until past 9pm and even then they spent a good hour rolling around having so much fun - I think I was the one who fell asleep first! I only have a 2 man tent so it was a little snug during the night but it means I can carry it on my bike.

Packing up

The rain clouds had returned by the morning so after a breakfast of rice pudding (it’s the girls camping breakfast treat - they love it!) on the beach, we quickly packed away the tent dodging the rain and cycled back to my parents house for a nice cup of tea!

Jude, what fabulous memories you are creating with your girls. I bet they love the whole cooking marshmallows on a fire bit. I know that when I take my nursery class to the forest, this is the highlight!

The girls love making pretend fires. Whenever we're out and about they piles up sticks and pretend to cook marshmallows!
