Tumbling Waterfalls and Campfires
Team McLean absolutely loved camping at Fisherground, Eskdale. After a rather terrifying drive over Hardknott Pass we arrived safe and sound. The weather wasn't particularly great but our boys don't seem to mind getting wet. There is something a little magical about Fisherground, with an adventure playground, pond complete with tyre rafts and it's very own steam locomotive station it's a family paradise.
We packed a picnic and followed the tumbling beck up to Stanley Force waterfall.
Enjoying the stunning scenery of the Eskdale Valley we strolled to the steam railway line, rewarding our tired legs with a wee train trip back to camp. We love a campfire which luckily for us are positively encouraged at Fisherground. After tucking two tired little boys up in their sleeping bags Stewart and I chat away as the campfire's embers fade. There's something special about breaking out of the normal routine of everyday life.

Thanks for the tip about Fisherground. It is so rare to find a campsite that allows open fires (especially in England), I will definitely put it on the list for a trip with the family this year.
Simon, I can recommend Rukins Campsite, Keld, North Yorkshire. The facilities are basic and may not be to everyone's taste but the location more than makes up for it. Unfortunately the site don't accept bookings but if there is space you can camp on the riverbank. There are lots of small waterfalls stretched along the river and you can make campfires over the riverbank (campsite provide firepits). It's fab! Happy camping :)
Thanks Helen, might try that one out when it warms up. Another one I like which in Gordale Scar campsite near Malham Cove. It is again very basic and slightly ecentric, but it is a fantastic spot by the gorge with a stream running through it.
