Canterbury Roman Museum

Canterbury Roman Museum

On our recent trip to England we spent a couple of days in Canterbury - a place which is well worth a visit with children. One of our best 'discoveries' was a small Roman Museum, which I am ashamed to admit we only popped into to escape the rain! It turned out to be brilliant.

The museum is off on a side street (Butchery Lane), easy to miss, and once inside it is pretty small. It has several rooms set up with scenes depicting Roman life in Canterbury, as well as an excavation of part of an original Roman Road.

However the best part was undoubtedly the 'hands on' area. This single room kept both girls happily occupied for well over an hour. There were archaeological artefacts to identify (with keys to guide you through); Roman 'rubbish' to sort; Roman clothing to try on; and mosaics to complete.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area, and quite a decent way to pass a few hours (and/or escape the rain!).

I think it's absolutely brilliant that a small museum finds space to have a hands-on area for kids (and adults, I'm sure). It looks very enticing - if only we lived closer!
