Wow! What a treat! Well done getting such a good photo despite the excited toddler!

I'm with Chloe - much as I like lambs, I prefer calves and cows :-) I'm looking forward to Harry's blogpost from Balmoral.

Fantastic idea! Biscuits, otters, sharks, sea-horses and obstacles, what more could a Little Trekkers ask for?

Mainau - Flower Island

Mainau - Flower Island

The girls are on holiday this week, and today they wanted to visit 'Flower Island' (or Mainau Island as it is more officially known!). http://www.inselmainau.net/ This place is just fabulous.

There’s a lot to appeal to everyone, and would be a perfect place to visit if you have varying age groups in your party. I can see us returning next time the grandparents are over.

The first thing we saw was this giant flower made of little flowers. Sofie thought this was just about the cleverest idea ever. We arrived early (it might be the holidays, but the kids are still up and ready to go at 6am), and spent the first hour of our visit in the kids play area.

In front of the giant flower

To be honest, with 2 energetic kids, it was worth going for the park alone, and arriving early meant we had pretty much the whole place to ourselves. The girls loved the rafts, and the sensory stuff, and the climbing opportunities, and pretty much everything about it. Plus, despite my reservations, no one actually fell into the water - always a huge (and unexpected) bonus!

Out on the raft

But eventually they were keen to go and explore the gardens, so we set off. We looked at flowers, we smelt flowers, we explored secret paths, and we liked the all the animals made of flowers. We ate a flower themed picnic lunch under a tree.

So if you happen to be passing by Mainau (just outside of Constance, on the Swiss German border), the girls and I highly recommended a visit.

Wow, this must be every gardeners dream world! It looks so bright and beautiful and I must agree with Sofie, the giant flower is amazing. Flower Island is going on my places to visit list for sure. Kathryne

Wow, this place looks absolutely fab Fiona, right up our street thats for sure. What a cool adventure playground and the flowers, they look fantastic! I wonder if it is particularly fab in the spring or whether they have different things growing all year that make it really cool all the time. We are thinking about a trip back to Europe in 2013....if we're anywhere near here we will definitely take a look!

Hi Joanne. It really is amazing. And it has flowers all the time (well from April to November). We went during 'tulip and daffodil' time, but we will revisit in a month when it is rose season. The web site has all the information about what you can see at different times of the year, but I think there is always something to see.

HI Fiona, I will check out the site! and I have some friends who live in Germany and go to Switzerland all the time, they would love it too so I'll be passing the information on to them as well. Tulips and daffodils are my favourite!! oh and sunflowers!! :o).....probably anything cheerful really!
