Waterfalls and Wet Weather
Yesterday we wanted to go hiking, but it was raining. Raining a lot. This in itself isn't a problem, but the hike we had planned would take a couple of hours, and the end point was a look out tower with views, which would be pretty pointless if the amazing views were shrouded in cloud.
So we simply picked a shorter hike, with a different focus instead. We decided to hike to the Berschner Waterfall, because a waterfall will always be good in the rain!
Because of the wet weather we saw lots of snails, as well as quite a lot of flowers, which Sofie was thrilled to identify with her new wildflower book. Sofie is 6 years old, so we got her an identification book that separates the flowers into groups based on flower colour, making it easy for her to use. She just flips to the relevant section (e.g. plants with pink flowers) and looks at the pictures to work out what she has found.
The trail got narrow and steeper, but we could hear the waterfall, so we raced on (ok, technically the kids raced on, and I questioned the wisdom of bringing 2 kids hiking on a narrow, slippery trail, with huge drop offs and no safety rail).
We made it to the waterfall, and it was amazing (although super rainy and wet by this point). We ate our snack in the rain by the lovely river, and have all decided we will definitely revisit this area.
And for anyone who likes waterfalls and happens to be visiting Switzerland, I highly recommend the web site www.waterfall.ch It is even available in English!

That looks like a fantastic little ID book! Did you buy it in Switzerland?
I'd love to know where to get that little book - never mind 6 year olds - I like the idea of using colour to identify flowers!
I bought the book in a local bookstore, so it is all in German, which is perfect for us, but maybe not so helpful for others.
I am hoping to pick up something similar when we are back in the UK this Summer to use on our hikes there. I would suggest actually going into a bookshop and looking though the section. Our particular book was actually the smallest and cheapest flower id guide in the shop!
Mmm - I have enough trouble remembering the English names so German is def going to be a step too far for me. Must have a look around, though, and see if there;s anything similar here.
