Plastic Free Picnic

Plastic Free Picnic

23rd Jul 2020

July celebrates all things plastic free. As people who like to spend our time outdoors, we aim to become more eco-friendly in our approach and plastic free as much as possible to help the environment. We are becoming more conscious and will regularly have a plastic free picnic.

BEING PLASTIC FREE HAS MANY BENEFITS.

Using reusable alternatives means less waste. Animals and wildlife are prone to being harmed by litter. Waste is piling up in landfills and suffocating our oceans. A conscious effort needs to be made to protect our planet. Being plastic free works out to be more cost efficient in the long term. There is an initial outlay for alternatives, but over time, there is less cost for disposable drinks bottles or sandwich bags. Plastic free alternatives are generally better quality too, so you're getting a good product that will last a long time with proper care. Most plastics contain toxins that are harmful to your body, not just to the environment. The most known is BPA. BPA is a chemical mostly found in storage containers for food and beverages. There is a concern that the chemical seeps out of the plastic and contaminates the body. There is a concern that BPA can affect your hormone levels, cause problems with fertility and has a link to heart disease.

SO, HOW CAN WE BECOME PLASTIC FREE IN OUR PICNICS?

Instead of using sandwich bags, use reusable wraps. They come in various designs and sizes and help keep your food fresher for longer. As they are made out of fabric and beeswax, they are washable and will keep for years. Bamboo is becoming a popular alternative to plastic containers. I purchased a bamboo lunch box and love how it looks and feels. Not to mention how good it is for the environment. You can now get bamboo plates, cups and cutlery as a great addition to your picnic set. Plastic free picnic Metal is also good for containers. It cleans well and will last forever with the right care. Metal straws are a fantastic alternative to plastic. Don't buy single use water bottles. Invest in a steel flask to keep hot drinks hot, and cold drinks cold such as the Sigg Hot and Cold Thermo Bottle. If there is packaging around your food when you buy it from the supermarket, try and decant everything before you take it with you. That way, there can be no fly away wrappers. Having a plastic free picnic is one way to encourage the kids to more conscious of the world around them and to inspire them to be more mindful of the environment. Remember the golden rules.
