Splashing in the Shimna

Splashing in the Shimna As winter turns to spring, we Teagues are beginning to plan for Summer 2017. One of the highlights of last summer was definitely our church camping weekend at Tollymore Forest, home to Ashley’s favourite kayaking river – the glorious Shimna! When Harry clapped eyes on it though, all he wanted to do was jump in. We tried to convince him otherwise – it’s a mountain-fed river and hence absolutely freezing and there’d been no room for wetsuits in the car with all our camping gear. Unfortunately there was no talking him out of it so there was nothing else for it – Ash would go first. And Harry would follow! I wisely volunteered to stay dry and take the photos. As expected, it was a very quick dip.But both Ashley and Harry totally loved it and so I decided I was missing out. We hastily got Harry into some dry clothes and left him with the camera, hoping for some action shots. This was the result. He was obviously too busy getting his post-dip selfie! I was so glad I’d taken the plunge even if there’s no photographic evidence of it. The water was absolutely freezing but really quite invigorating and the memory of it has got me through many a grey day this winter. We’ll definitely be including more wild swimming in this summer’s adventures. Has anyone got any recommendations for the ultimate dip? Written by Kerry Teague on Monday, 13 March 2017. About the Author Kerry Teague About Me & MineAshley (Dad/ 3rd child/ chief photographer). Me - Kerry (Mum/ the sensible one... sometimes). Harry (10) can't (won’t?) sit still unless he’s bow paddler and Chloe (nearly 8), likes to cartwheel everywhere and critically analyse Harry’s paddling techniques. It’s definitely time to start saving for a second open boat! We spend as much time as possible having "adventures" (which consist of anything which takes place outside and is accompanied by official “adventure sweeties” – the chewing of which delays Chloe’s critiques and gives Harry’s ears a rest). If only he’d realise how much she adores him!Favourite place in the world Ashley and me - Strangford Lough, The Mourne Mountains, anywhere outside with the Little Trekkers, especially when the sun is shining (snow is a bonus!). Harry – Alan’s farm. Can occasionally be persuaded elsewhere if it requires a paddle or harness to get to. Chloe - anywhere as long as it's outside and preferably with a big brother to emulate and somewhere to toast marshmallows. Lying in the hammock in a forest listening to a good audiobook is another firm favourite. (Mine too, if I ever got the chance!)Favourite things to do outdoors Biking, climbing, canoeing, digging holes on the beach, jumping in rivers, having campfires, looking for squirrels, butterflies, crabs and basking sharks. Reading Harry Potter aloud under a tarp at bedtime on Salt Island has been our 2018 highlight so far. Leave a comment You are commenting as guest.
